  1. Question: Why does charley still give to willy when willy doesn't want nothing from him?

Answer: Charley still gives to willy even though willy doesn't want nothing from him because he feels bad for willy and understands where he's coming from. He just wants to show willy that he still cares about him not matter what goes on or happens. After Bernard left for his train and willy and charley where just conversing about willy, Bernard and the job charley asks him" are you jealous of me?'(74-75). He wants willy to know that he has his back 100% and wouldn't try to bring him down because at one point in time he use to be like that and knows how it feels. He doesn't want willy to feel as though he is trying to out do him by being successful then having willy work for him knowing that willy is a failure. He wants to make him not break him.

  2. After reading today in class I can say that Willy has to much pride. He obviously is struggling has no job and now he won't take money when he needs it the most. In the text it says, " I've always tried to think otherwise, I guess. I always felt that if a man was impressive, well like, that nothing-" (75). Willy thinks that all he need in life is to be well liked by people and he will make it. H e doesn't realize that he needs help more then ever becuase being well liked won't pay the bills, they never did and never will. Charley is trying to help him but his pride is in the way.

  3. Why doesn't Willy accept Charley's job offer?
Willy has been offered a job by Charley and he gets paid $50 a week without traveling. That is just what will needs. But, Willy declines the offer because of his sense of pride and wanting to get out of his current situation by himself. Willy is asking Charley is he can borrow $110 to pay his insurance and that he will pay him back. Then Charley asked Willy why didn't he take his job offer. Willy yells, "I don't want your goddam job"(75). Willy is refusing to take help from Charley because he has been borrowing money from him every week to help with his payments and he wants to fix the situation he is in without receiving anymore help from anyone. Willy's pride in not wanting help is getting in the way of him getting a job that can support his family and pay the bills.

  4. Question : Why does Willy get so offensive when Bernard brings up Biff's actions after he comes back from Boston ? How does this show Willy's change in his feelings towards Biff in this section of the novel ?

Answer : Willy gets offensive with the situation that Bernard brings up about Biff lying down and becoming a failure after he came from visiting Boston or looking for his dad in Boston because Willy knows what happened in Boston , but he's trying to cover himself by getting offensive and making it seem as thoug Bernard is wrong or out to get him. In this section of the text Bernard is all grown up and not the little, geeky kid Willy used to know. Bernard is Biffs boyhood friend and him and Willy are discussing how Biff has changed and is not motivated like he used to be back in grade school. Bernard brings to Willy's attention that Biff failed math , but was determined to go back to school to pass, it was only after he went looking for him (Willy) in Boston that Biffs life has changed drastically and he has given up hope on everything possible in life for him. Willy then tries to "turn the tables" on Bernard as if Bernard was wrong for bringing up the situation in the first place. In the text it states , "Bernard: ... What happened in Boston, Willy ? ...Willy: What are you trying to do , blame it on me ? If a boy lays down is that my fault?"(73) Willy tries to remove the spotlight on himself not making himself guilty of whatever happened in Boston , yet still making it seem as though Biff is just a lazy bum and has no determination. In this section of the novel , Willy pretends that he is so angry at Biff because he failed math back in grade-school , but it is only a "front". As Bernard and Willy are discussing Biff's change in endurance within school Willy learns that his son failed math in grade-school , while Willy was in Boston. In the text it states "Bernard: Willy , I remember , it was June , and our grades came out. And he'd flunked math. Willy : That son-of-a-bitch"(72). Willy wanted to know how Biff has had a sudden change in work ethic from then in school to now as an adult and he slowly finds out. As he finds out Willy pretends to be upset with Biff , calling him out of his name and degrading his title as a man.

  5. Why does Willy take it personal when Bernard ask him what happened in Boston?
Willy takes it personal when Bernard asks him what happened to Biff in Boston because he doesn't want to be responsible for Biff's downfall. Willy didn't want to be the one to blame for his son not being successful. Bernard was insinuating that something may have happened to Biff while he was in Boston because when he came back he was not the same. He seemed to give up on life and make a turn for the worst. In an excerpt from DOAS it states, "Nothing. What do you mean, 'What happened?' What's that got to do with anything? What's that got to do with anything? Well dont get sore. what are you trying to do, blame it on me? If a boy lays down is that my fault?" (73). Willy was offended when he felt that Bernard thought he had something to do or knew something about why Biff was giving up and no longer trying to push himself in school. Willy became defensive and shut down. In all actuality, Willy probably did have something to do with why Biff was upset when he returned home, however, he didn't want to be held accountable for it.

  6. Why does willy continue to lie to everyone about his life and how it this hurting him? Do you think he is trying to convince others about his lies or himself ?

Willy is still looking for this success that he never had and he is a very proud and stubborn man. Willy is trying to lie about his life to make himself seem strong even though he is weak because he is a man."Charley: why don't you want to work for me? Willy:whats the matter with you ? I've got a job". Even though he eventually tells Charley that he's been fired he still lies to him at first to save pride and its this very pride that wont let him except Charley's job.

    1. Sometimes, people lie enough to make that lie become a reality, at least in their minds. Willy has been lying for years to his family and the people around him, so much that he has even convinced himself, at times, that those lies are true. Willy usually returns from his own false world and back to reality. In the play when Charley asks if Howard had fired Willy, Willy acknowledges that it's true, saying, "That snotnose. Imagine that? I named him. I named him Howard," (75). This all after Willy continuously tells Charley that he has a job, the truth finally comes out. It's as if Willy has a double life- one in reality and one in his mind (which he most likely prefers to live by). And these hallucinations do hurt him because he is a very hubris man, he's torturing himself when he realizes that people have figured him out- figured out the truth.

  7. Willy has too much pride. He knows he is struggling in life but refuses help from anyone. When Charley offers Willy a job after finding out he has been fired Willy says," I don't want your goddam job!...I-I just cant work for you, Charley"(75). Even after Willy has cried for a job from Howard, needs to pay his insurance, and needs money to support his family he refuses to receive a job from his friend. He has to much pride and ego. He wants to keep his dignity it seems.

  8. What's the difference between Bernard and Biff, what do we find out about Biff on pg. 71?
The difference between Bernard and Biff is that Bernard took his high school years very seriously he tried to help Biff but he didn't realize what Bernard was trying to do for him.Bernard finish high school and became a lawyer while Biff is still struggling to find a decent job. On pg 71 it says " Bernard: Yeah, but, Willy all he had to do was to go to summer school and make up that subject." if Biff did this he would have went to college since he got a scholarship for playing football and might of made it into the pros or had a chance in the business world.

  9. Question: Do you think that Willy in some way has given up on Biff or is this part of him teaching Biff that its time to grow up?

I think that Willy is trying to allow his son, Biff, to grow up and to realize that he's not responsible for him anymore. I also think that in this time in the book Willy has stop making his family a priority and has realized that his kids would needt to make thier own sacrifices in life. For example when Willy gets offended by Benard when he tells Willy that it was kind of his fault for making Biff who he is now, Willy lets Benard know that what Biff does with his life is out of Willy's hands; he's no longer responsible. According to the book Willy states,"Nothing. What do you mean, 'What happened?' What's that got to do with anything? What's that got to do with anything?, [Benard]- Well dont get sore. [Willy]-what are you trying to do, blame it on me? If a boy lays down is that my fault?" (73). This shows that Willy doesn't want to get blame of the wrongdoings of his son Biff because he feels that it's time for Biff to take in consideration of his own actions.

  10. In my point view from after the reading that was done in class, Willy, has to much pride. I say this because Charley offers Willy a job and Willy is refusing to take it I think his doing this because the "American Dream" is to provide for your family not to have someone else do so for you. Charley is offers Willy a job set at $50 a week and Willy doesn't take the offer. The author states, "I don't want your goddam job" (Miller 75). Willy clearly has to much pride to receive help from anyone, he wants to prove he can do it himself.

  11. How does Willy show the archetype of a tragic hero?

In DOAS Willy has an extreme mount of pride in himself. When Charley ask Willy if he wants a job he refuses and says he has a job even though he was just fired by Howard. " I am offering you a job. I don't want your goddam job! (75). Willy is showing extreme pride in himself and not accepting the job Charley is giving him even though he gives him $50 every week.

  12. Why might Willy have gotten angry when Bernard asked him about Biff's visit to Boston? What might have happened in Boston to cause Willy's anger?

Willy might feel guilty about something that happened in Boston. I believe Biff might have seen Willy with The Woman when he went to Boston; she was earlier introduced as Willy's mistress, who would visit him when he stopped up there. This might be why Biff resents his father's behavior towards their mother, and also why Biff pushes back from his father's judgement because he feels as if Willy has no room to judge anyone when he isn't as perfect as he makes himself up to be. Willy gets defensive when Bernard brings up Biff's Boston visit saying "Nothing. What do you mean, 'What happened?' What's that got to do with anything?...What are you trying to do, blame it on me? If a boy lays down is that my fault?...Well don't-don't talk to me that way! What does that mean, 'What happened?'" (73). Willy gets angry and all Bernard did was ask him a question. He didn't accuse him of anything or say he caused Biff's downfall, so obviously Willy has a guilty conscious about what might have happened in Boston between him and Biff.

    1. i think willy gets upset because he feels as though biff's situation is his fault. willy feels like it is his fault that his son can not reach success. on page 73 he say ," What are you trying to do, blame it on me? If a boy lays down is that my fault?" (73). willy feels as if he is the blame for biffs failure. willy feels guilty for his actions as a father. he feels as though he has failed in teaching his sons the right way to being successful. because he is not leading by example as a successful man he feels as though he has let his boys down

  13. Question: Do you think that Willy is trying to run Biff's life?
I have come to realization that Willy is trying to live hos life through Biff since he was not able to achieve his full dreams in life. So instead, he is hooked on the way he "thinks" Biff should live his life. For example, after telling Willy about the new job that Biff may receive from Oliver, before he goes to bed, Willy commands and advises Willy, "Don't be to modest. You always started too low. Walk in with a big laugh. Don't look worried. Start off with a couple of your good stories to lighten thing up. It's not how you say it-because personality always wins the day" (48). This shows how Willy is trying to run Biff's life and the way he try to do things because of the reason he so badly wants him to achieve more in life than he was ever able to. which is good but Willy tries too hard to advise Biff with things that he could do in order to make in the world and mike it big like his father said he did, but because he do it so much, Willy comes across as controlling and as time progress, he actually becomes controlling toward Linda and especially Biff.

  14. RODERICK CHAVIS:

I want to ask what is going on between Linda and her protecting Willy no matter what? Why does she seem to put WIlly before everything and everybody? Does Linda believe Willy is more important than her own kids?

  15. ALVIN JOHNSON:

Why do Willy have more respect for Bernard now.

Willy have more respect for Bernard becuase of that he acutally made it into the world successful. Bernard is an lawyer and living very well with the type of money that he his making now. Since Willy two son is now people who could hardly make a decent living now, he wants to know how he did it and how he miss it the steps he did for having Biff have a better life now. Biff and Willy have a little talk with their life and also seen that he have a big life still ahead of him."Willy: how-did you?why didn't he ever catch on? Bernard: I wouldn't know that. willy: You were his friend, his Boyhood friend. There's something I understand about it. Hios life ended after that Ebbets field game." This explain how that many times that he had a chance to make opperntuity real but could by his own fate . with uncle ben and his father ways too. which one to choose. none.

  16. why doesnt willy accept charley offer ?

Willy doesnt accept charley offer because he claims that he already had a job . Willy knew he was lying beacuse howard just fired him . but charley knows thats not the case .willy just didnt want charley help because he felt like charley was trying to insult him not knowing that he jus want too help willy . Willy finally admits to charley that he just got fired and charley started giving willy advice. he tells him that it deosent matter that you gave howard his name because you cant " sell his name " the only thin g you got in this world is what you can sell " (75) charley is telling him how good of a salesman he is but willy still tells him he cant work for him.because charley is his only friend. So willy doesnt want another friend to fire him bascilly he doesnt want to get betrayed again . that is why he wont accept charleys job offer.

    1. I agree. I think Willy's self pride leads to him not wanting to accept the job which Charley is offering him. As Willy talks to Linda he shows how his self pride, envy, and even his regret leads to the way he reacts to Charley’s job offering. In the text it states, “I told you we should’ve bought a well-advertised machine. Charley bought a General Electric and it’s twenty years old and it’s still good, that son-of-a-bitch” (53). He tells Linda that he regrets not having bought a better refrigerator like the one Charley bought. He has a self pride in which he feels as though he has to be as good or better than Charley but sadly is not able to. He doesn’t want to take the job because he would then be working for Charley which would make him feel less than him. Also if he were to take the job he wouldn’t be able to compete with him anymore because he’ll have already been placed in a lower position. He doesn’t want Charley to have that superior power over him therefore even though he has just been fired he will not accept Charley’s job offer.
