Post a question and CCEJ response to the scene we acted out in class today.  You may also want to review it here:

No Fear Othello Act Two

  1. Why does iago want desdamona?
Iago wants desdamona because he feels as though othello isn't worthy of her and has stolen her. In the act 2, iago talks to roderigo about desdamona also loving cassio. In the process, iago thinks to himself that"now, i do love her too...and nothing can or shall content my soul till i am evened with him wife for wife..."(79). Iago believes othello stole desdamona and everything else he has from iago. Iago is persistent on stealing it all back to make himself and othello equal.

  2. Why does iago act the way he does? I belive that iago is insecure about himself and is there for consumed by jealously. Iago says nothing but good things about othello "The Moor, howbeit that I endure him not Is of a constant, loving, noble nature, and I dare think he'll prove to Desdemona a most dear husband". Iago just admits that othello is a good man and would make a good husband for Desdemona, yet he still wants to see them othello fall. Iago is jealouse and he wants what everyone else has, he wants cassio's possition and he says "now, I do love her too". He is referring to Desdemona he is jealous of what she and othello has so now he wants her .

  3. What is one issue Iago has with Emilia?
One big issues Iago has with Emilia with her is that she has a lose tongue. Emilia tends to open her mouth and speak when not spoken to, and spill things out that aren't meant for all ears. Iago complains by saying "Sir,would she give you so much of her lips, As of her tongue she off bestows on me,You would have enough' (Lines 112-114). Iago is fed up with the fact that he can have a wife that can keep her mouth shut. He's really saying that any man could have her since she's no use to him.

  4. Do you think Emilia might warn Othello of her husband's desire to take his revenge on Othello, since in the book so far her charcter is described as talkative?

We already know that Emilia is described by her husband as very talkative and a person that doesn't know how to close her mouth. For example in Act 2 Scene 1 lines 112-114 it states, "Sir,would she give you so much of her lips, As of her tongue she off bestows on me,You would have enough''. This line shows Iago's aggression of his wife's talkative personality and behavior. And because of this I predicted that because Emilia talks a lot and because she is the wife of Iago, that she might know of his where abouts and might even let Othello know or let Desdemona know. And this leads me to another question: Will Desdemona warn her husband of Iago's plan thanks to the help of Emilia?

  5. Why does Iago make up the fake scenario about Cassio and Desdemona creepy around ?

Iago makes up the scenario about Cassio and Desdemona creepy around because he wants Cassio and Othello to get into a dispute so that he can start a war , he wants to get back at Othello for making his life miserable and he wants to make Othello feel as though he is on his side even though he isn't. In the text it states ",That Cassio loves her, I do well believe't That she loves him , tis apt and of great credit. The Moor, howbeit that I endure him not...I put the moor At least into a jealousy so strong that judgment cannot cure" (79) Act 2. Scene. 1 This shows how Iago plans to make Othello jealous by making him think that Cassio wants Desdemona because of his assumptions after seeing Cassio kiss Desdemona's hand. Iago will ruin both the guys lives in an attempt to make his more pleasurable. He seeks revenge and misery loves company.

    1. I think that Iago makes up stories about Cassio and Desdemona creeping around because he wants to get Cassio out of the was so that he can take his job. From the beginning Iago has been somewhat salty because Othello gave the job that he wanted to Cassio. Ever since this happened Iago has been willing to do whatever he can in order to get what he wants. He even goes so far as to plot on Cassio with Rodrigo, "The Lieutenant tonight watches on the court of guard. First, I must tell thee this: Desdemona is directly in love with him" (lines 238-240). Iago knows that Rodrigo is in love with Desdemona, because of this Iago convinces Rodrigo to try to start a fight with Cassio so that he could lose his job.

  6. Once again Iago is back at it again making plans to ruin Othello chance with Desdemona. In Act two scene one what does Iago want Roderigo to do?

Iago wants to Roderigo to start a fight with Cassio so that he could get fired. The author wrote,"Sir, he’s rash and very sudden in choler, and haply may strike at you. Provoke him that he may. For even out of that will I cause these of Cyprus to mutiny, whose qualification shall come into no true taste again but by the displanting of Cassio. So shall you have a shorter journey to your desires by the means I shall then have to prefer them, and the impediment most profitably removed, without the which there were no expectation of our prosperity"(Othello). This quote shows that Igao knew that Cassio was the type of person when you say something to him he becomes mad fast. So starting a fight with Cassio would get him in trouble. The reason why Iago is doing this is because he saw Cassio and Desdemona getting flirty. So this is a way Iago can get rid of Cassio.

  7. How is Cassio setting himself up for Iago's plan to run smoothly?

Cassio is constantly complimenting Desdemona when he speaks to Montano. He says over and over again how beautiful she is and how lucky Othello is to have her. He says to Montano, "As having sense of beauty, do omit their mortal natures, letting go safely by the divine Desdemona" (65). In these lines, Cassio is calling Desdemona something special, as if he has a crush on her. This continuous praise from Cassio about Othello's wife will make Iago's plan, of accusing Cassio of cheating with Desdemona, go smoothly because it will be more believable and Montano could back it up with this fact.

    1. I agree Cassio is setting himself up for Iago's plan to run smoothly because he is constantly being friendly/ mildly flirtatious with Desdemona and even Iago's wife. Cassio speaks of Desdemona and says," The divine Desdemona..Hail, to thee, lady, and the grace of heaven"(65). Cassio even speaks kindly of Iago's wife and the text says he kisses her in front of Iago. Cassio's kind gestures to others may come across as distasteful and too flirtatious. People may start to believe in him having an affair with Desdemona due to his persistent kindness.

  8. Why does Iago say "I do suspect the lusty moor"? And what will he do about it?

The reason he says that is because Iago's believes that Othello is sleeping with his wife. Iago wants revenge on Othello for thinking that he has slept with his wife so he wants to get back at him. Iago feels like he won't feel satisfied until he gets even with Othello "And nothing can or shall content my soul Till I am evened with him, wife for wife." If Iago don't succeed in sleeping with Desdemona he would just have to try everything to make Othello jealous which probably would make Othello not think right but he would need Roderigo help to carry out his plan.

  9. What is Iago plan to ruin Othello and Desdemona love?

Iago plans to tell a rumor about Desdemona being involved with someone else. Once seeing Othello and Desdemona happy together, he tells Roderigo his plan to break them up. He whispers to Roderigo " The Lieutenant tonight watches on the court guard .First I must tell thee this: Desdemona is directly in love with him"(75). This plan will work as the rumor will spread from the Lieutenant and to the rest of the people in Cyprus. Thus will further weaken the people faith about Othello's relationship and Iago knows this

  10. How can a reader describe Iago's personality,or character?

Iago's character can be described as evil, and exemplifies the characteristics of a sneaky two faced person. Iago has let his jealousy and greed take control of his heart. In the the text Iago prepares a plan to set Othello and Desdemona apart and say, " But partly led to diet my revenge for that I do suspect the lusty moore"(79). This shows that Iago will try and think of a way to get his revenge on Othello, by telling lies about him to Desdemona, or by just telling lies to Othello about Desdemona and Cassio.

    1. I agree. Iago's character can be described as manipulative. He is also an opportunist. He will do whatever it got to take to get to where he wants to be. He also is willing to throw anyone under the bus. In an excerpt from the text it states, "If such tricks as these strips you out of your lieutenantry, it had been better you had not kissed your three fingers so oft, which now again you are most apt to play the sir in" (71). Iago said anything to make someone believe what he wanted them to believe; even if that meant lying. He lied to multiple people just so they would turn against each other. Ultimately he made himself seem like the good guy in the mist of it all. He manipulated everyone.

    2. I agree but to add on to Edwin's response, Iago's character can be described as the villain. He stirs up trouble throughout the play with his scheming , manipulative ways and disrespectful comments. In Act 2 SC. 1 , Iago takes it upon himself to criticize Desdemona and Emiilia "You rise to play and go to bed to work” (69) basically saying their only good for sex.

  11. What's one difference between Desdemona and Emilia?

A difference between Desdemona and Emilia is that Desdemona is more outspoken. On several occasions, Desdemona has stood up for herself like when her father was telling her to break up with Othello. She also stands up for other people as well, with no fear. She explained how she loves othello too much to leave him just because her father says so. In this scene, Iago calls Emilia talkative, and disrespect her by saying that her real job is in the bed, and what she does all day isn't real work. Emilia doesn't stand up for hersel, but Desdemona stands up for her and says, "Alas, she has no speech" (II.1.112), then goes onto say that he should be ashamed of himself for speaking so poorly about his wife. It shows that Desdemona is kind of out spoken and stands up for what she believes in whereas, as pointed out by Desdemona, Emilia is very soft spoken, and reserved.

  12. Will Desdemona be the first to see Iago actual true colors?

Desdemona is a strong will female who is able to stand up for herself and others. When Cassio was flirting with Emilia, Iago's wife, Iago decided to talk to about her in way that she only good for her mouth and there is nothing else special about her. Desdemona jumps into the conversation to defend Emilia and her and Iago go back and forth. Iago talks about how all women are the same, and there only good for their looks.Desdemona states," Oh, most lame and impotent conclusion! Do not learn of him, Emilia, though he be thy husband. How say you, Cassio? Is he not a most profane and liberal counselor?" (71). To clarify, Desdemona is saying how Iago is stupid for making assumptions about women and that his wife Emilia shouldn't listen to him. Also, how Iago is a horrible man and Cassio is more fair. Showing how already Desdemona see how Iago is not really nice and fair and could be very mean. So Desdemona already can see how Iago can be two face.

  13. Is Iago’s hate for Othello from him having sex with his wife or for Othello not giving the lieutenant position to Cassio?
Iago’s hate for Othello mostly derives from Othello having sex with Iago’s wife but Othello not giving the position to Iago caused Iago to hate Othello more. Othello having sex with Iago’s wife is more deceiving and is a valid reason as to why Iago hates Othello compared to Iago not getting the job he wanted. In Act 1, Scene 3, Iago says, I hate the Moor…Will do as for surety”(55) iago states that it is rumored that Othello had sex with his wife in his home and although it has not been proven true, he believes it anyways and plots on Othello. Iago’s hatred for Othello is mainly fueled by the affair and not him getting the job he believed he should have had.

  14. Why Does Iago feel the need to talk poorly about Emilia ?

Iago talks poorly about Emilia after Cassio kisses Emilia in greeting. Iago calls Emilia a blabber mouth after Cassio greets her with a kiss. "If she gave you as much lip as she gives me, you’d be sick of her by now"(70). Iago thinks his wife is a blabber mouth, and that he practically doesn't care for her as much anymore because she talks so much.

  15. Why is Iago being so negative towards women ?

In this scene Iago is bashing Desdemona and Emilia about women being pretty much nothing In society but objects used for sexual purposes. He tells Desdemona and Emilia, "Come on, come on. You are pictures out of door, bells in your parlors, wild-cats in your kitchens, saints in your injuries, devils being offended, players in your housewifery, and housewives in your beds." (119-123) Iago continuously lashes out at the girls about basically being born as women and only being needed on earth for sex because they are worthless.

  16. What does Iago's idea of an honorable title and what it takes to get there show about his character?

Iago believes he has to have Cassio's job or higher to be considered important. This is obviously not true as everyone refers to him as "Honest Iago". Still Iago's thirst for power is unsatisfied, and he devotes his life to bringing down others to get where he wants to be. In the play it states "I'll have our Michael Cassio on the hip, abuse him to the Moor in the (rank) garb (For i fear Cassio with my {nightcap} too). Make the Moor thank me, love me, reward me for making him egregiously an ass and practicing on his peace and quiet even to madness" (79-81). Iago had plans to take Cassio's job by making him seem unfit. He was plotting against Cassio. He believed the only way to get where he wanted was to be sleazy, thus making Iago a bad person. This shows that his character isn't a very honest or honorable one at all, he just deceives people into believing he is.

  17. Why do Iago thinks that Desdemonda would fall out of love with Othello ?

Iago thinks that Othello is ugly and his personality sucks so therefore Desdemonda would stop liking him. He believes that Desdemonda would search for someone new. She will search for some one who is handsome and who is quite similar to her. He sees from his eyes that she already for certainly has her eyes on Iago. He states, " Now for want of these required conveniences, her delicate tenderness will find itself abused, begin to heave the gorge, disrelish and abhor the Moor. Besides, the knave is handsome, young, and hath all those requisites in him that folly and green minds look after. A pestilent complete knave, and the woman hath found him already" (lines 212-230). Iago thinks that Desdeonda wouldn't want Othello for long. Cassio is one who she would be interested in to become her next lover. Othello is a person that she would soon forget and will longer be married to due to his actions as well as words.

  18. Why is Iago trying to get Cassio Drunk? Why doesn't Cassio think nothing of it when he refuse to drink?
Iago just want to cause problems and want Cassio to act a fool so he can get caught up and lose his job. He intentional wanted Cassio to drink on purpose which shows how he is not a friend at all to Cassio but Cassio drinks any ways. For example in the text it states " I have very poor and un happy brains for drink in.and Iago states "O, they are our friends! But one cup; I"ll drink for you"(83). Cassio is trying to basically set up Iago so he can act foolish and so every on could think Igao is a drinker.Which shows how Iago want to get Cassio to drink but Cassio goes alone with the plan.

  19. Maranda question: What is Iago plan to ruin Othello and Desdemona love?

Iago plan to ruin Othello's and Desdemona's relationship is to have Cassio flirt with Desdemona, so that he can go back to Othello and tell. Iago is only doing this because he's mad at how Othello made Cassio the lieutenant and not his self. With that, Iago is getting back at Othello by making up false rumors and assumptions. In the text, he stares, "That Cassio loves her, I do well believe't. That she loves him, 'tis apt and of great credit" (Shakespeare 79). From this quote, it is showing how Iago is making assumptions about Desdemona just so he can go back to Othello and tell. Therefore, with that Iago, plans to ruin Desdemona's and Othello relationship by making up rumors and assumptions, then going back to Othello to tell him. If Iago wasn't mad about where he stood in society, then he wouldn't have had been doing this.

Do you think that Iago really wants to separate Othello and Desdemona, or does he want to see Othello at lost for something?

The reason why I asked this question is because, in Act 2 Scene 1 we see more of Iago's true colors and his plan to break up Desdemona and Othello. But in the beginning Iago's iniaitive was to get revenge back at Othello by not positioning him as lieutenant. But if thats true, why is he going after Othello and Desdemona's relationship. I honestly think that he's not just after breaking up both Desdemona and Othello's relationship but that he wants to see Othello broken and hopeless. For example on page 79 Act 2 Scene 1 Iago states, " Now, I do love her too, not out of absolute lust (though peradventure I stand accountant for as great a sin) But partly led to diet my revenge"(79). This shows that Iago's main intention was not to hurt Desdemona or her relationship with Othello, but he wanted his revenge on Othello. And to do this, he wanted to see Othello hurt and he wanted to put him in a predicament in which he wasn't powerful to control.

To answer Bryanah's question: Why do Iago thinks that Desdemonda would fall out of love with Othello ?

I think that Iago doesn't think that Desdemona would fall out of love with Othello but, I think he's making himself beleive this in other to prove to Othello Desdemona's infidelity. For example we arleady know that Desdemona really loves Othello because he won her hand by telling her stories of his horrific past life. And also, by her obedience and love for him that also proves her loyalty to him. For example according to page 73 it states, "The heavens forbid but that our loves and comforts should increase even as our days to grow" (73). This shows the love that Desdemona has for Othello and how it would be hard for her to fall out of love with him. Also, Iago 's main intention was not to break up Othello and Desdemona's relationship but to get back at Othello for not making him lieutenant. Also later on in the text we find out that Iago succeeds with his plan of separating Desdemona and Othello and when Othello finds out Desdemona accepts death over accepting the lie that she cheated on Othello. Therefore this shows that Iago doesn't really think that Desdemona will fall out of love with Othello but that he wanted to destroy Othello's life.
