  1. Linda reveals that Willy wasn't the big shot salesman he claimed to be. She explained to the boys that not only was he struggling excelling in his job, he also attempted to harm/kill himself on several different occasions. She tried to convince the boys that everything wasn't so cut and dry regarding their father. He was struggling with more personal problems. In an excerpt from DOAS it states, "He drives seven hundred miles, and when he gets there no one knows him anymore, no one welcomes him" (41). Linda sympathize more with her husband then their boys did. She tried to get them to understand that Willy is a hardworking man who needs all of their love and attention right now; especially while he's going through something. They all need the boys support instead of them not working and talking bad about Willy, she wants them to work and be productive, supportive members of the house hold. she needs them more than ever to step up to the plate and be men.

What Linda reveals to the boys about Willy is that he is suicidal. Linda feel as thought Willy no longer wants to live anymore maybe because he has no reason for living anymore. The author wrote," Willy Loman never made a lot of money. His name was never in the newspaper. He's not the finest character that ever lived...He's dying Biff." This quote shows that Linda understands why he is feeling like this he just wants to be respected by his son and they are not giving it to him. Biff wasn't really supporting Willy in the beginning because he started saying things about Charley about what Charley was and wasn't doing as a person. Towards the end Linda reveals to Biff that Will is dying then he shows that he wants to be there for his father and show him that he cares about him a lot and to limit arging with Willy. The author wrote," Biff: He's got no character- Charley wouldn't do this. Not in his own house-- spewing out that vomit from his mind... Lind: Make Charley your father, Biff...Biff: all right pal, all right. Its all settled now. I've been remiss. I know that mom. But now I'll stay, and I swear to you, I'll apply myself." This shows that Biff is goin to stay and support his father and show him respect as long as he is living. Linda says that Willy life is being lived but has no meaning, no one recognizes the work he puts in. The author wrote," Instead of walking he talks now. He drives seven hundred miles, and when he gets there no one knows him any more, no one welcomes him." This shows that he life doesn't matter to anyone anymore, he is just another old man working with no name. Linda views Biff and Willy relationship as strong before and now it is now dead. The author wrote," Linda: What happend to the love you had for him? You were such pals!" This shows that the bond that they previously had is no longer there based on what Linda has been observing for a long time. Now she has to deal with him having arguments with himself when he knows that Biff is coming to visit. The author wrote, " When you write you're coming, he's all smiles...And then closer you seem to come, the more shakey he gets, and then by time you get here , he's aruging, and he seems angry at you." This shows that Willy has more that enough time to think about Biff not talking to him and its hurting Willy inside because that's his son and he is not making an effort to show him respect.

What does Linda reveal to the boys in this scene?

In this scene, Linda reveals to the boys that their father Willy is suicidal. Linda describes that all the car accidents he had weren't accidents at all, but attempts to end his life, and it is also revealed that Willy no longer has a salary, but instead works for commission. " He works for a company thirty-six years this March, opens u p unheard-of territories to their trademark, and now in his old age they take his salary away...For five weeks he's been on commission, like a beginner, an unknown !...He's been trying to kill himself....The insurance inspector came. He said they have evidence. That all these accidents in the last year--weren't--weren't--accidents...Well, it seems she was walking down the road and saw his car. She says that he wasn't driving fast at all, and that he didn't skid. She says he came t o that little bridge, and then deliberately smashed into the railing, and it was only the shallowness of the water that saved him" (40-43). Simply put, Willy works on commission and no longer gets a salary from the company that he has worked for so long for. He is depressed and has had numerous suicidal tendencies.

  4. Linda reveals to her Biff & Happy that Willy has been trying to kill himself. Linda tells them about the insurance inspector coming to see her to let her know that the accidents weren't really accidents. She also lets them know about the women who watched there father during one of his accident. Linda says "well it seems she was walking down the road and saw his car. She says that he wasn't driving fast at all, and that he didn't skid. She says he came to that little bridge, and then deliberately smashed into the railing, and it was only the shallowness of the water that saved him"(43). By stating this, she was proving the point that the accusations of Willy trying to kill himseld was true. The point of Linda letting Biff and Happy know about Willy's suicide attempts is to persuade them that he won't be all right because he is dying.

  5. In the begging of the scene Biff hostile towards his father and tells his mother that he is crazy and doesn't have any character. In the novel it Biff says,"He's got no character- Charley wouldn't do this" (Miller, 40). Then Linda tells Biff and his brother how much of a struggle it was for Willy to make money as a salesman. She tells them, "He[worked] for a company thirty-six years this March, opens up unheard-of territories to their trademark, and now in his old age they take his salary away" ( Miller, 40). The boys are shocked to know that their father was struggling despite him always making his sons feel as though he was a successful business man. In the novel it Biff says, " Those ungrateful bastards!... I'll live here in my room, and I'll get a job...screw the business world" ( Miller, 41-44). He no longer had hostility towards his father, he had it against the people his father worked in because of him being ill treated because he works long hours and gets paid every little, especially since he found out that his father has tried to take his own life.

Linda reveals that Willy isn't a successful seller as he pretends to be, he tried to kill himself multiple times and that Biff and Happy don't appreciate Willy enough for what he's done for them. Willy is struggling with his job and doesn't make as much money as he used to. He's also trouble with paying the bills and goes as far as borrowing money from their neighbor ,Charley. "When he has to go to Charley...How long?"(41). Linda is very well aware that Willy has been borrowing money from Charley and she is wondering how much longer that is going to go on. Linda reveals to the boys that he has tried to kill himself while driving. "The insurance inspector came... weren't accidents"(42). Willy, on numerous occasions has tried to kill himself and it is has finally been revealed Linda that he has been doing this deliberately. Lastly, Linda reveals that Willy isn't crazy, but he is a hard working man who has done a lot for his sons. This explains why he is so hard on Biff being a 34 year old, not successful and living with his parents. "The man who has never worked a day... one a philandering bum"(41). All of Willy's hard work was for his sons and to help support them. Linda feels that all of Willy's hard work has gone to waste when his sons don't appreciate the things that he has done for them in the course of his life and that they still aren't independent and living their lives the way he possibly envisioned.

  7. RODERICK CHAVIS:

Pages(38-44) What Linda reveals in this scene to her sons is that Willy was dying and that he was trying to kill himself by crashing the car into things. This in my eyes means Willy is losing hope in achieving this American Dream and he wants to take himself out of the disappointment in which he believes he brought to his family. In this scene it states, " I'm-I'm ashamed to. How can I mention it to him? Every day I go down and take away that little rubber pipe. But, When he comes home, I put it back where it was. How can I insult him in that way?"(43). This is showing how Linda understands he feel as though he has failed in so many areas financially, as a father and maybe even a husband. This shows how Willy is trying to do many things to get out of this situation even if it means killing his wife Linda along with him

  8. In this scene Linda reveals to Biff and Happy that Willy has been trying to kill himself because no ones likes him as much and he's not popular. In the text it states "He drives seven hundred miles, and when he gets there no one knows him anymore, no one welcomes him" (41). The attitude changes at the end of the scene because Linda now wants the boys to get a job and start becoming men and stop stressing Willy out. She wants them to do this so Willy can live life with out stress and regrets on his past and life in general

  9. How does she view the change in Willy and Biff’s relationship? How does it affect her?

Linda changes the view of Willy and Biff's relationship by explaining telling the boys the truth. She sheds light on why things are the way they are and explains a bit about Willy's behavior. She explains to Biff why Willy feels so hurt and heart broken about their relationship being in shambles; Linda asks Biff and Happy, "The man who never worked a day but for your benefit?. . . Is this his reward. . . he put his whole life into you and you've turned your backs on him. Biff, his life is in your hands" (Miller 41 & 43). Linda wants to express her deepest pain to the boys about why Willy feels so hurt. She wants the boys to know how betrayed Willy feels by his own sons, who he put everything into, in order to raise them the right way. It hurts Linda to see her family falling apart and she just wants things to go back to normal.

What does Linda reveal to the boys in this scene?
Linda reveals that Willy hasn't been the great salesman he used to be and that he has attempted to kill himself multiple times over the years. Willy has become sad at the fact that he doesn't make the same money as before. All of his friends have died and people no longer recognize him to buy things from him.In the text Linda says, " But now his old friends , the old buyers that loved him so and always found some order to hand him in a pinch -- they're all dead, retired"(41) Linda here talks about how Willy first buyers no longer exist since they are no longer in the business world. he has no way to make income because are not buying nothing from him and he has to borrow 50 dollars from Charley to make seem as if he is making some money. She also talks about how the accidents he had in the past were really accidents but more intentional . Willy has come to a point were life is meaningless since he cant do what he sign up for.

Linda reveals that Willy trying to kill himself. He tries to kill himself by getting into to car accidents. When Linda says, "He drives seven hundred miles, and when he get there no one knows him anymore, no one welcomes him. And what goes without having earned a cent? Why shouldn't he talk to himself? Why? .... (41)” This explains why Willy wants to kill himself. When Willy goes to work he doesn’t feel like he belongs. When Linda says “Willy Loman never made a lot of money. His name was never in the paper. He’s not the finest character that ever lived. But he’s a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him. So attention must be paid. He’s not allowed to fall into his grave like an old dog. Attention, attention must be finally paid to such a person (40).” This also explains why Willy wants to kill himself because every one that was in his group are died or retried.

  12. At the beginning of the scene, Biff is insensitive towards the issue with his father. He is nonchalant because he thinks his father's episodes are not that serious. Linda tires her best to convince Biff to stay home so that he would be able to support his father. Biff says, "I hate this city and I'll stay here" (42). Biff lets his mother know that even though he doesn't want to stay home, he will just for the sake of his father's sanity. However, when Linda tells him Willy is on the urge of death, Biff is now sympathetic and decides to stay. He says to Linda, "All right, pal, all right. It's settled now ... you never tried to please people" (44). At the end of the story Biff changes his mind to show that he cares. Therefore, his feelings towards his dad changed after he was told about the obstacles Willy faced.

How does she view the change in Willy and Biff’s relationship? How does it affect her?
Linda feels that there have been a change in willy and biffs relationship because growing up biff was always the apple of willys eye, the favorite, then it went from that to resentment that biff have towards willy. Linda thinks that because of the change that is going on with willy, biff is starting to disown him or feel ashamed of his father’s acts outs. “Then make charley your father, biff. You can’t do that can you?” (40) This shows that Linda have realized the way that biff have been acting towards willy and she wants him to understand that willy will always be his father, and biff will have to deal with it and back his family up at this hard time.

Biff calls his dad crazy in the beginning of the scene but changes his mind in a positive way by the end when he states that he’ll be staying at home and will manage to have a better relationship with his dad. He starts off the scene stating, “He’s got no character . . . You called him crazy” (40). He soon states, “All right, pal, all right. It’s all settled now. I’ve been remiss. I know that, Mom. But now I’ll stay, and I swear to you, I’ll apply myself” (44). He has listened to his mother’s confession of what Willy’s sons, Biff and Happy, are unable to see for themselves. Linda tells the boys of how their father was willing to give his life for them and explains how his actions are all simply because he is exhausted. Through his mother’s words Biff is able to change his view of his dad and his actions. He decides to settle down and not put his dad’s life at risk anymore. He is willing to do something he doesn’t feel like is what he was meant to do but he is willing to do it to save his dad. Willy has worked so hard that he is extremely tired. He has tried to kill himself and that is what leads Linda into telling her kids what is really going on with Willy. In the end she does reach that goal and makes Biff realize his thoughts and actions are wrong and are impacting his father negatively.

  15. In the beginning, Biff is very angry with his father toward him, but by the end of the scene he becomes understanding of the circumstances. When Linda informs Biff that Willy doesn't have a job and he's been trying to kill himself, Biff becomes more sympathetic. Biff, to his mother, says, "All right, Mom. I'll live here in my room and I'll get a job. I'll keep away from him, that's all"(41). Before, Biff was eager to go back home rather than stay in the house with his father, but when he figures that his mother and father needs help, he becomes willing to sacrifice his happiness for the survival of them.

  16. Linda is tremendously disspapined in Biff's and Happys's relationship because they have grown distant. Biff's and Happys's camaraderie is supposed to be affectionate; however their relationship is taking a drastic turn. Linda is disappointed because she notices their relationship formed into one of strangers: "what happened to the love you had for him?... How lonely was he till he came home to you ? (41). Biff and Happy established a relationship of genuine brotherly love. However, they began to speak less, and did not desire to talk to each other as much. Their relationship began to slowly deteriorate and Linda became quickly apparent to this change. This begins to take a drastic toll on Linda by disappointing her.

  17. In this scene of the play, Linda and the boys, Charley and Biff, are talking and Biff says that his Dad, Willy, has "no character". This offends Linda and she begins to rant. During her speech, she reveals that Willy is suicidal. She says that the insurance inspector claims that Willy has been purposefully driving off of the road, he is not falling asleep at the wheel. Linda also says, "[she] was looking for a fuse. The lights blew out, and [she] went down the cellar. And behind the fuse box-- it happened to fall out-- was a length of rubber pipe-- just short," (43). This reveals that Willy has been trying to kill himself, yet he is still trying to hide it.

-Linda reveals that Willy is having a series of problems and that he is not doing as well as he told everyone in his buisness. Linda walked in and found willy talking to himself and begging to try to get him to go to bed.Biff and Willy enter and start asking Linda why they never got help . Linda reveals that willy is having many buisness problems. "He drives seven hundred miles, and when he gets there no one knows him any more, no one welcomes him. And what goes through a man's mind, drving seven hundred miles home without earning a cent ? why shouldnt he talk to himself ? " (41). Linda tells the boys that there father is not doing so well and he actually has a reason to be talking to himself . Willy has been putting on a facade that his business is doing so well and that he is making enough money to support the family and now that Willy is caught talking to himself Linda is finally telling the boys about there finaical sisitutaion.

Linda: What goes through a man's mind, driving seven hundred miles home without having earned a cent? Why shouldn't he talk to himself ? Why? 20. What does Linda reveal to the boys in this scene?

In this scene, Linda reveals to the boys that their father is dying. Not only that, but that he is trying to kill himself. Linda explains how Willy crashed his car in February and that after an insurance inspection, it was declared that he had done it on purpose. There was also a woman that Linda says witnessed the accident. Linda tells that the woman said, "he came to that little bridge, and then deliberately smashed into the railing". (Miller 43). This is what Linda reveals to her sons, however, they refuse to believe it to be true.

By telling Happy and Biff that Willy been trying to commit suicide she has the hope that this will convince Biff to stay around and build a relationship with his father. The author states, "He's dying, Biff" (42). Linda wants Biff and Willy to have a father and son relationship and by telling Biff that his dad is dying, he'll appreciate him more because of it.

  22. Linda doesn't approve of Willy and Biff being so separated. Willy is getting old and is having problems and Biff distance is making him feel any better. Linda feels that Biff needs to be there for his father more. Linda says to the boys, "What happened to the love you had for him? You were such pals! How you used to talk to him on the phone every night! How lonely he was till he could come home to you!" (42). Linda tries to make her sons feel bad for being absence in their father life. She feels that if they were home more to be with him then he wouldn't be having his problems. Biff not being there for his father is only putting more weight on Linda's shoulder and its too much for her to handle. Linda hopes that Biff can a little more sympathetic and come home more.

  23. Linda reveals to her sons: Biff and Happy, that Willy is dying. She also tells them how he has attempted to do suicide several times over the past months when Biff and Happy were away. But by revealing this I think that she herself is afraid of losing her husband, even though she acts calm around the kids to make it seem that everthing is okay. For example in the book Linda states "He's dying Biff…he's been trying to kill himself"(42). Even by Linda being his wife and trying to support him, while life is hard right now for him by being the provider of the family, she knows that there is nothing to do to save him unless their family bonds together.

How does Biff respond to his father's episodes (talking to himself)? Why?

Biff responds to his father's episodes of talking to himself by getting upset. He gets upset after seeing this because he don't like how his mother never told him about how his father talks to himself sometimes. This is Biff's first time seeing this, unlike his mother, she's use to Willy having conversations with himself. Biff states, "what the hell is the matter with him ?... Why didn't you ever write me about this, Mom ?" (38). Biff is upset because his mom knows his father talks to himself but never bothered to le him know about this problem. Biff assumes something is wrong with his father and hates that he had to find out the problem with his father this way. However, since Biff is hardly around his father, he would have never gotten the chance to see his father acting that way.

Thats why she was so excited when he said he made a hundred dollars. Whenhe has to go to Charley and borrow fifty dollars a week and pretend to me that's it his pay?" (41). This shows Biff and Happy that there father isn't going as well as he says he is. It makes it okay for Willy to be stressed out because now they know that he is not doing as well. Linda also informed them of why he thinks he is a failure because of the missed opportunity he had with his brother Ben.

  27. In this scene Linda reveals to her boys that their father's salary was cut off, and he drives almost 700 miles away when he isn't getting payed at all for his hours in his job. In other words Linda wants her boy's to understand that their father needs their help, just like he sacrificed his life and time for them. In the text Linda emotionally speaks to her boys and says, " The man who never worked a day but for your benefit? When does he get a medal for that? Is this his reward to turn around the age of sixty-three and find his sons, who he loved better than his life, one a philandering bum-" (41). Linda is truly hurt by all that is happening to Willy. He's been the best father he can be for both of his sons, and all he gets from that is that both have remained bums. They have not made advancements in their lives yet.

Linda describes how Willy tries to kill himself: "[Woman] says he came to that little bridge, and then deliberately smashed into the railing, and it was only the shallowness of the water that saved him" (43). 35. Linda reveals that Biff and Happy father is not doing as well and that they shouldnt be as hard and more appreciative of their father. Willy Biff and Happy father is struggling to keep a steady income flowing to provide for his family. So he constantly needs to borrow money. For instance in the text it states, "When he has to go to Charley and borrow fifty dollars a week and pretend to me that it's his pay"(Miller 41). The evidence is explaning how in order to make ends meet, Willy needs to borrow money from Charley his next door neighbor. He pretends to Linda it's his pay because he doesnt want to disappoint her and tell her he not doing his job as a husband and a father. A man is suppose to provide for their family and the fact he cant do that he sucks up his pride and borrows the money. Borrowing the money means he family wont have to go without and he will do anything to make sure his family is well taken care of.
