In what way did Willy talk to Biff ? Did he build his confidence?
Willy talked to Biff in a supporting way. Willy started giving Biff tips on how to become a sucessful businessman after getting excited over Happys ideas to sell sporting goods. Willy wants his children to do better than him not become him. Willy wants his children to live the American Dream and live a life with no regrets. That's why Willy is so hard on Biff specificully because he knows Biff can be better than an average businessman. After the heated conversation Biff had with Willy, Willy began to give advise to Biff some tips to become a great businessmen. It says, "Walk in with a big laugh. Dont look worried. Start off with a couple of your good stories to lighten things up. Its not what you say, its how you say it- because personality always wins the day... Because you got a greatness in you, Biff, remember that. You got all kinds of greatness" (48 and 50). To be honest this is what Biff needed from Willy because if he did not say that Biff probably would not have the confidence to actually go along with this selling sporting goods. This all goes back to Willy wanting his children to live the American Dream. Willy sacrificed his way of living the american dream so that Biff and Happy can. Because Willy and Biff had a rocky relationship, caused Biff to not have the confidence to be advenurous. Since Biff did not have the confidence, caused him to not fulfill what Willy wanted for him. If he did not achieve the american dream like Willy wanted, then Willy would feel he failed as a father. Therefore Willy speaks to Biff in a confining way because he knows Biff is capable of doing greatness and living the american dream, something Willy was not able to live.
I agree with tyron, Willy Talks to Biff and help by supporting him. Willy gives Biff alot of key points and tips on how to be succesful in business after geting happy over happys idea. Willy wants his kids to live the american dream, and wants them to be successful.Thats why Willy pushes Biff like He do ; because he wants Biff to Do so Much Better . To my understanding If willy wouldve never pushed Biff to do better, then I dont belive Biff would Have been able to actually sell sporting goods , because he would not have confidence to do so. So yeah I do belive Willy Helped Biff in A good way.
i agreed with tyron that the have a very supporitve talk. willy informs his son of how to be a good business man. he tells himw hat to do and what not to do while working. " and dont say 'gee'. 'gee' is a boy's word. a man walking in for fifteen thousand dollars does not say ' gee'(48) willy tells him the do's and dont's of business. he wants him to do good and better than he did. he wants his son to succeed an live like he was suppose to. i also believe by doing this he did boost his confidence because now biff can feel better about becoming something. he wont have to feel guilty about not working anymore and he can finally achieve something with the advice his father has given him
Willy and Biff both come up with idea in this scene. What is the idea they come up with and does Willy seem to agree with it?
The idea Willy and Biff comes up with is the idea of selling sport goods. They come up with this idea in order to create their own line in which would be called the Loman Line so that they are able to make money. With this line, it would connect to the dream of their father's in which was to become successful business men one day. With this idea, Willy does seem to like it because he states how the two of them could "Lick the world! You guys together could absolutely lick the civilized world" (Miller 47). From this quote, Willy is saying that they can become successful and rich because of the fact Willy believes it "is a one-million-dollar idea" (Miller 46). Because the two of them come up with an idea that involves business, it is what make their father happy. This idea makes their father happy because he always wanted them to keep the business idea going and to be successful. Therefore, the idea Willy and Biff comes up with is creating their own sporting goods line in which their father seem to agree with and like because of all the money it could provide for them.
*p.s it is Happy who mainly comes up with the idea first, and just happens to include Biff in it so that it would be a brothers business. "The Loman Brothers"
I also agree with Tyron that Willy talked to Biff in a supporting and helping way. Willy wanted to help Biff out because he understood what he had been going through. With being without a job and knowing that he wanted to become a business man he supported that and wanted to help him. (48) " Dont look worried , Start off with a couple of your good stories to lighten it up" Willy was giving him tips on what to do and certain things to say so that he was able to become the business man. And Willy wanted to see that happen and was supportive of him. - Alliyah Mccollough
Does Willy feels useless by not working and asking his sons for help ? I believe Willy feels as though that by him not working he will be consider a bother to his family. Willy doesn't want to depend on nobody. If he was able to take care of his family for over 40 years, then he wants to take care of them for 40 years more. In the text it states, " I cant throw myself on my sons. I'm not cripple"(63). Willy doesn't agree with Howards idea of his sons taking care of him. Willy wants to work regardless. His sons have other things to worry about , to be thinking about taking care of their father. Willy just doesn't want to be a bother nor feel as though he cant do nothing no more.
My questionis more of what will happen next. What dod you think Biff i gonna do with the rubber tubing he found?
Well in the book we as the readers we find out that Willy trys to attempt suicide frequently by using the rubber tubing Biff finds behind the heater. We know that Willy is going through a rough time accepting the fact that he's alone and is failing on his family. He tries to kill himself out of stress and realizing how everyone he use to know seems to be ahead of him. For example Biff finds the rubber tubing that Willy probably uses to hang himself, it states, "Biff reaches behind the heater and draws out a length of rubber tubing. He is horrified… Biff wraps the tubing around his hand and quickly goes up the stairs"(51). By think this hsows that Biff is probably gonna confront his father of his sucidal attempts. But I think that he might realize that the right time has to be the time when Biff and his father is in a good place together.
What is Biff’s point of view on how Willy treats Linda? How does Willy further prove Biff’s idea?
Biff thinks that Willy treats Linda in a bad way. As she tells him what she thinks is going on with Willy and why she acts the way she does towards him Biff gets even madder because he doesn’t think she is treated right by his father and she is just trying to justify his answers with things that don’t make sense to him. In the play he states, “Stop making excuses for him! He always, always wiped the floor with you. Never had an ounce of respect for you” (40). During the same scene he has an argument with him dad in which he is telling Willy to not yell at his mother. Willy soon states, “Will you let me talk? . . . I was talking, wasn’t I? . . . Don’t take his side all the time, goddamit!”(48). Willy yells at Linda for having input her opinion in the conversation him and Biff were having. He also yells at her because he believes she is taking Biff’s side. Overall Willy doesn’t treat Linda the way a proper woman should be treated, with respect and Biff doesn’t like that. He thinks Linda deserves to be treated better than she is especially because she is dealing with Willy’s mood swings all the time unconditionally.
Briona- an expansion on the question of how does Willy talk to Biff
Willy talks to Biff based on whether or not he agrees on what Biff is doing at the moment. For instance When Willy thinks that Biff is making fun of him he talks to him quite harshly. he tells Biff what he doesnt do compared to other workers. Willy states," Even your grandfather was better than a carpenter. You never grew up. Bernard does not whistle in the elevator, I assure you"(44-45). However, when Biff talks about something that Willy agrees with such as starting a million dollar business he speaks with more compassion. Willy also states,"Because you got a greatness in you, Biff, remember that. You got all kinds a greatness"(50). In one conversation Willy does a full 180 on Biff depending on whether or not he agreed with Biff at the time. As long as Willy was right when it came to Biff, then Willy was not. If Biff went against what Willy said then he was mean to him. Willy likes to be in the right and doesn't like to be challenged and his mood depends deeply on that fact.
It is very easy to make Willy happy because if Willy is told something that makes him upset, he'll show an upset mood, but if one mentions to him something hopeful, he forgets how upset he was. In other words Willy likes to here the good news. Biff and Willy have a conversation about how good the idea was about him starting his own sports business suddenly Biff says, " I don't like you yelling at her all the time, and I'm tellin' you, that's all "(48). This shows that Biff ends up telling something to his father that makes him upset, which is something that Linda does not like for Willy due to his stress levels.
I agree with tyron with the way Willy is Talking To Bliff and happy because basically he is supporting them.He want them to realize how important it is to be a good bussiness man. So willy is giving him/them advice about bussiness. In the text willy is saying " Walk in very serious. You are not applying for a boy's job.Money is too pass..Everybody likes a Kidder but nobody lends money." (47) Willy is trying to tell them its a time and place for everything . Its a time to have fun and its a time to be serious. When it comes to work it is time to be very serious. He is telling them its alright to have fun but nobodygives people that have fun any money (job). In my opinion willy is bascially making sure bliff is understanding the importance of becoming a bussiness man. Willy is giving him alot of advice to look up too, He is giving him tips to take off of. Stuff like that. Willy also says " I see great things for you kids, I think your troubles are over ". He means that he seeing that the boys are trying to improve and do better. Doing something sucessful with there lives by starting off big and ending off big.Since thats what people are saying.
What happens at the end of Act One, what does Willy say to Biff? At the end of act one Biff gets get into a somewhat argument with Willy," Biff: Don't yell at her, Pop, will ya?, Biff: I don't like you yelling at her all the time, and I'm tellin' you, that's all." So Biff an Willy get into a little argument about how Willy talks to Linda. After this they somewhat make up," Willy: And don't undersell yourself. No less than fifteen thousand dollars... Because you got greatness in you, Biff remember that. You got all kind of greatness."
Why does Linda ask if Howard got anything against Willy?
Linda asks Willy if Howard got anything against him because she's wants him to ask Howard if he would let him work in New York. Linda and Willy is having calm conversation and enjoying the moment while Willy sings. Then Linda shyly ask Willy whats going on between him and Howard because she was curious and worried about Willy not having a job.Linda states, "willy dear, what has he got against you?Willy states,"I'm tired. Don't talk any more. Linda states,"Will you ask Howard to let you work New York? Willy then states," first thing in the morning. Everything'll be all right"(51). Linda was worried about Willy's future future in the business world. Willy on the other hand didn't want her to worry because he knows how timid she could be.
