Why is she so nervous ?
I think that she is nervous because with the aptitude test and the choosing ceremony many things come with it. In the text it says " today is the day of the aptitude test that will show me which of the five factions I belong in. And tomrrow at the choosing cermoney I will decide on a faction I will decide the rest of my life." Pg 2 I think that this relates to her being nervous because it's a big decision to make and it's making her nervous because of the fact because she have to see if she is going to stay with her family or abandon them and I think this is where she is carrying the barrier on her back.

Why is being Divergent dangerous in a dystopia ?

I believe being Divergent is dangerous in a dystopia because divergent means different because they don't fit into the different factions. In a dystopian society the government wants all people to be the same and they expect everything to be calm so they won't have any trouble with how they are running their society. However, they believe that Divergent people are a threat to them because with one citizen acting differently then it will bring problems to their government. In the text the instructor explains to Beatrice during her aptitude testing that she may be divergent quietly. It states, "people who get this kind of result are . . . she looks over her shoulder like she expects someone to appear behind her. are called . . . divergent," (Roth 22). Tori says that she is divergent low because divergent really does not occur around a dystopia. Tori does not want anybody to hear her tell Beatrice that she is Divergent because being Divergent is dangerous in a dystopian society.

    1. I agree with Shadrea because Tori constantly reminds Tris to not let anyone know that she Is divergent because it is very dangerous. If anyone found out that she was divergent she would probably be excused out of the community and never allowed to see her family or friends again. By Tori warning Tris about not saying anything it also shows how dangerous this situation really is and what certain consequences will arrive.

      Delete
    2. In the text Tori says,"I mean you should never share them with anyone, ever, no matter what happens"(23). This shows that divergent people maybe dangerous to society and something bad can happen to them if people figured out that they are divergent.

  3. What will happen if someone found out if Tris was divergent?

I think that if anybody found out that Tris was divergent, she will be sent away with the non-factionless. People who are divergent are seen as a threat to this society. In the text Tori says,"Beatrice," she says, under no circumstances should you share that information with anyone. This is very important . . . I mean you should never share them with anyone, ever, no matter what happens. Divergence is extremely dangerous. You understand?"(22-23). The constant reminders of Tori telling Tris not to tell anyone about her faction is a sign that she will get a really bad consequence if her secret got out. As Tori said, divergence is dangerous and people of a good society will try to put a dangerous person out or keep them away from their community.

  4. Why does Beatrice Decides to be in the Dauntless faction instead of the faction that she was born into?

Beatrice decides to be in the dauntless faction because she felt as though it was time to change her ways of living. This is her way of coming of age because she wants to pick a faction that best suits her. Her brother Caleb also help her make a wise decision by saying, "Beatrice," he says, looking sternly into my eyes. "We should think of our family. . . But. But we must also think of ourselves" (36). Tris may have been inspired by her brothers words as we'll and decided to do something for her self for the first time since her former abnegation faction put others before them.

  5. Shadrea :

why does the people apart of the faction needs to cut their skin and put it in the bowl?

I believe Beatrice and the other people are cutting their skin because their choosing the faction that they may belong in. This is the way showing that the people are choosing which faction they believe they belong in. Beatrice used the faction Dauntless so she would not have to show that she is Divergent. In the book it states, "My eyes shift to the bowls in the center of the room. What do I believe? I do not know; I do not know; I do not know," (42). Beatrice tries to figure out what faction she belongs in instead of saying she belongs in Divergent which is dangerous.

    1. Good job with your posts. You are missing the last one and your second post could use a little more development, but it is clear you are reading and comprehending the text. Nice work! 28/45

    2. I agree with Shadrea as well. The teens who are from the other factions cut their hand and place it over the bowl of the other factions because, they want to be apart of that faction. In the text it says, "I shift my hand forward, and my blood sizzles on the coals. I am selfish. I am brave"(47). This shows that by tris cutting her hands and putting it over dauntless that is what she wants to become. She murmurs,"I am selfish. I am brave." Which the dauntless people are known for. She wants to become one of them. By her cutting her hand she is also giving not only herself to them but also her blood.

  6. Why is Tris' community a dystopian society?

Tris' community is a dystopian society because there are people called the factionless who don't have proper homes like the other factions and live in poverty. The factionless don't have any rights in the community and are separated from the others who are more health and wealthy. In the book it says, "there are places where the road completely collapsed . . . this is where the factionless live. Because they failed to complete initiation"(25). This shows that Tris' community is a dystopia because while the other factions are able to do great things and have a great life , another group of people can't. Everyone isn't equal.

  7. Is there any evidence of sarcasm presented in the text?

Yes, there is evidence of sarcasm in the text. Sarcasm comes up when Peter makes fun if Tris and Tris defends herself. Peter constantly misses the target after he makes fun of Tris about a knife. Tris says," Hey, Peter,"I say."Remember what a target is?"(159). This shows evidence of sarcasm because Tris is being funny towards Peter knowing that he does know what a target is but she asks him about it anyway since he didn't hit one.

  8. Shadrea,

what does the exercise capture the flag represents?

the exercise capture the flag represents bravery because the Dauntless faction are split up in to 2 teams where they are in competition with each team to see who gets their flag first. This competition opens up risks and brings people out of their character and opening up to being Dauntless. Dauntless means unaccustomed to fear, so this brings the characters out their comfort zone. Tris brings bravery into this competition climbing the Ferris wheel to search for the other team. In the book Four asks Tris a question, "what do you think learning strategy has to do with. . . . bravery?" (144). I believe that the competition shows bravery in this book between the Dauntless teams and brings people's more open to obstacles.

  9. Shadrea,

    why does Peter bullying Tris?

I think that Peter keeps bullying Tris because he feels as though Tris is weak and since they had a fight and he beat her up he feels he can take over Tris and she would not do anything. Tris shows Peter that she does not want to hurt anyone by her actions but Peter believes that since Tris chose this faction that she should be ready for anything. In the text Tris says that someone has shoved her shoulder before she jumped off the train car, "Just before I jump, someone shoves my shoulders, and I almost topple out of the train car. I don't look back to see who it is-Molly, Drew or Peter, it doesn't matter which one," (136). Tris does not worry who has pushed and she wonders if it was Peter because Peter is bullying her after their fight.

  10. Shadrea,

Do you think Christina is using Tris for fame?

Yes, i think Christina is using Tris for fame. I say this because after Tris figures out the plan to get the flag from the other team Tris wants to rush to get the flag before the 2 people that she is running with Christina and Uriah. While running Christina tells Tris "Come on, Tris," "You're already the hero of the day. And you know you can't reach it anyway," (153). I think that Christina wants to feel more accomplished then Tris is and people to recognize her. I think later on in the book Christina is going to trade on Tris after competitions where Tris lets Christina takes the spotlight. Tris is going to overcome and be greater than Christina is and Tris is going to try and take the spotlight once again then she already has,

  11. TASHA:

Question: What was the reason behind the creationof the factiins?

Answer: The reason behind the creation of the factions was to create a better world and living for the young adults who lived in the dystopian world. Each child was given a chance to decide on the life they will now partake in untill the end of time. Veronica Roth states "Therefore this day marks a happy occasion-the day on which we recieve our new intiates, who will work with us toward a better society and a better world." (pg.44) In my opinion i believe that the factions are a very good idea, only because when things get rough in that particular faction the child cannot get upset because they were given the time to pick their own faction.

What does in mean to be factionless in Tris's society?

To be factionless means to basically be poor. The only way you can be factionless is if you dont complete the intiation. Tris which was Beatrice at the time of the choosing ceremony strived so hard to not be factionless. Tris has her own way of definig factionless. In the text it states " This is where the factionless live. Because they failed to complete initiation into whatever faction they chose, they live in poverty, doing the work no one else wants to do. They are janitors and construction workers and garbage collectors; they make fabric and operate trains and drive buses. In return for their work they get food and clothing, but as my mother says, not enough either." (pg.25) This clearly states that Tris doesnt want to factionless. By seeing this Tris beleved that she would never be factionless, because being factionless makes you look bad and you'll never be anything or accomplish anything in life.

  13. Do you think that it is possible that Peter could have stabbed Edward in the eye?

I believe that it is possible that Peter could have stabbed Edward in the eye because he was kind of upset that Edward was placed first in the 1st stage of initiation. Peter was in second place and wanted to be first. Also when the initiates heard Edward screaming Peter was not there along with Drew. In the text it says, "My hands and knees are soaked with blood. When I look around, I see that only two faces are missing. Drew. And Peter"(203). This draws suspicion on Peter and drew because once the accident happened they were no where to be found. The knife was still in Edward's eye. This could have given Peter and Drew sometime to escape before the initiates turned the light on to see who was screaming.

  14. Why does Tris' mother seem to know her way around the dauntless compound?

Before reading ahead I figured that Tris' mother was dauntless at one point in her life. It seems that my predictions were right. Tris' mother was dauntless before, that's why she knows her way around the dauntless compound. In the text it says, "She has been to the compound before. She remembered this hallway. She knows about the initiation process. My mother was Dauntless"(188). This shows that my predictions were right. Also in the book readers can figure out that Tris' mother was dauntless because she told her daughter to stay in the middle part of the chart during the initiation process, because if she was at the top they will know that she may be dangerous or too powerful. She knows everything about the process in which the initiates have to overcome until they are called Dauntless.

  15. Since Tris' went zip lining with the Dauntless born initiates, do you think that her friends will look at her differently?

I believe that Tris' friends will only look at her differently if she constantly hangs out with the Dauntless born initiates. But right now they only questioned her where about and why she was hanging out with them. Nothing major. Since this was her first time hanging out with them she only got questioned. In the text it says, "Where were you?" asks Christina. "What were you doing with them?"(224). Her friends will only question her for now. If she continues to go on adventures with them then they will feel like she's one of them considering the fact that Dauntless born initiates and the new coming initiates don't be around each other.

  16. Will this test let the dauntless administrators know that Tris' is Divergent?

I think that this test might make the Dauntless administrators suspicious of Tris' abilities. This test will test the initiates emotions. In the text it says, "I will then forward the recording to Dauntless administrators"(232). Throughout this test Tris was being attacked by Crows and got out of the hallucination in three minutes, which is faster then the other initiates ever did. This might make Dauntless administrators suspicious because she was the first to survive this test in 3 minutes.

  17. Are there any suspicions that Four might be hiding a secret as big as Tris'?

Yes, there are suspicions that Four most likely is keeping a secret like Tris'. When Tris asks him about his test results and hallucinations, he really doesn't want to tell her. In the text it says," What was your first hallucinations?" I say, glancing at him. "It wasn't a 'what' so much as a 'who'." He shrugs. "It's not important"(238). This shows that Four is hiding something and doesn't want to speak upon it. He tells tris that she shouldn't worry about it and how this big deal is not a 'what' but a 'who'. Maybe it's about who he really is.

  18. Why is Eric so jealous of Four?

Eric is jealous of Four because Four was ranked better than him. Four was chosen to be the leader before the Dauntless people picked him. In the text it says," So he was their second choice for leadership." I nod slowly. "And you were their first"(241). Eric is the type of person who doesn't like to place second and wants to be perfect every step of the way. By Four being the first choice for leadership and Eric being second, this may have made Eric feel as though he was not good enough and make him feel that he has to do whatever he can to be leader.

  19. Why do you think Al killed his self?

I think Al killed his self after what happened with Tris when Peter, Drew and Al jumped her and almost killed her because of Tris not forgiving Al after what he has done to her. I also believe that he may have killed his self because Tris refuses to forgive Al and has threatened Al by saying, "Never come near me again," "If you do, I swear to God I will kill you," (300). Tris says this because she feels betrayed by what Al has done by connecting with the enemy and try to hurt her. Al may have killed his self over what he has done to her.

  20. Is Tris right for taking Peter with her?

I believe that Tris made the wrong decision to take Peter with her after the Duantless and Abnegation war because he tried to kill her once and who's to say that he won't try again. When Tris was placed first during the Duantless initiation process Peter was jealous and was one of the people that jumped her and tried to kill her. In the text it says, "You want me to take you," i say , "the person who tried to kill me. . . with me?"(464). This shows some type of evidence on why Tris should have not saved or took Peter with her during the war because he tried to harm her. Tris should have just let him stay at the Duantless compound where he could have been miserable and felt the same pain as she had when he decided to jump her.

  21. What do you think will happen in the next seris of Divergent "Insurgent" ?

I think by the ending of the book Divergent Tris, Peter, Caleb, Marcus and Tobias will end up going to the faction of Amity to get help because of their factions were destroyed by the Dauntless and Eurdite. Amity is at peace and everyone around gets along with each other. That seems like it's going to change because of Peter and Marcus are traveling with Tobias, Caleb and Tris. In the book Divergent Tris says, "I will not feel safe as long as Peter and Marcus are with us," (484). Tris feels when she gets to the faction of Amity that Marcus and Peter will cause damage while they are at the faction getting help. She does not feel safe for what she has done bringing them along with her.

  22. Do you think Tris made the right decision to go see her brother Caleb about the simulation serum?

Yes, Tris made the right decision on seeing her brother about the simulation serum because if she did not then the whole Abnegation compound would have been wiped out. The simulation serum was a way to control the duantless people into becoming soldiers and killing the Abnegation people. As soon as Caleb found out he had to warn the others so that it can be stopped and everyone could have been safe. In the text it says, "I did what you said- what mom said . . . I dropped out of initiation when i figured out what was happening"(449). This shows that when Caleb finally figured out what was going to happen he had to leave as quickly as he can to let his mom know the situation. Tris decisions to see her brother benefited because now they know what is going to happen and can save their old Compound. Abnegation.

  23. Do you think Peter and Marcus will plot revenge on Tris and Tobias?

I think that Peter and Marcus are plotting a revenge on Tris and Tobias in Insurgent because after what Tris and Tobias has done in Divergent. After Tris has shot Peter in the arm when they were in the Dauntless headquarters and she has told Marcus to stay away from Tobias. When Peter felt that Tris was not brave enough to kill him and she questioned him to ask where the simulations are being controlled, Peter told her she mind as well kill him because he is not telling her so she decided to shoot him. In the text where Tris shoots him, "People tend to overestimate my character," (463). This means that she is brave enough to do anything to save Tobias and help him by saving him for anything.

  24. What can you predict will happen to Tris and the others now that their faction is destroyed?

I can predict that Tris and the others are goin to become Amity. I say this because in the book Tris sent some of the Abnegation to Amity headquarters so that they can be safe from the war. She tells them that she will meet them there after she does what she has to do in order to control the mind controlled Duantless. In the book it says, " Then we'll have to decide who goes and who continues on to Amity"he says (454). This might be a way for Tris and the others to start all over and join a better faction that is safe and not involved in any conflict.
