Beatrice and her brother, Caleb, both chose factions other than the ones that they were born into. Why did Beatrice change her mind to pick a different faction rather than staying with her original one?

Beatrice chose a faction other than her original one because she wanted it to benefit her. She knew that this choice was one of the most important one that she would ever do. On her walk home, she ran into a factionless, homeless man on the street. The man told her "choose wisely, little girl (26)". He was telling her to be careful with the choice that she chooses to make. He obviously wasn't smart with his which was why he was in the situation that he was in which was being homeless with no family. He didn't want her to fall down the same path as her which is why he advised her. Also, her brother, Caleb, advised her too. He stated, "we should think of our family... But. But we must also think of ourselves (36)". Since he was in the same situation as she was, he wanted to bring it to her attention that the faction that she chose was based on her and how she felt about it. She began to choose the same faction she was in before because she didn't want to let her parents down. She chose otherwise because she hit knew that using it wouldn't have been wise because she wasn't as confident as she would be in the other group. Beatrice chose the other faction other than her on because it had to do her good for the rest of her life. It determined her future.

I agree with Tyiesha's response. But my question is do you think she made the right choice?

Honestly I think she did make the right choice because her faction it was all about being to selfless. The environment and life style was kind of dull and boring. The author wrote, " The houses on my street are all the same size and shape...their lawns are all crabgrass and their mailboxs are all dull metal" (27). This quote shows that the area where she had lived it really wasnt nothing exciting about where she had live. If u live in a place like that you are going to develop the characteristics of being boring. Beatrice wanted to be free due to the fact that in her former faction things where very strict and her parents was always around. So now that she is in the faction Dauntless she wanted to take advantage of her freedom. The author wrote, " I push my family from my mind, set my feet shoulder- width apart and delicately wrap both hands around the handle of the gun" (78). This quote shows that she is starting to come out her shell, she is willing to do a whatever it takes to pass the initiation so that she wouldn't be factionless. So what she had to do was not think so much about her family because if she do she would not be able to focus and she will begn to second guess herself it and it will cause her to fail.

To respond to Izaih question question I do think Beatricia picked the wrong fiction because she's different. She can't sometimes act like the people in the same fiction as her , but sometimes she wants to do her own thing . In the society she live I don't think they want people to make their own decisions because it's a dystopia , and the government wants complete control. But I also don't think that she picked the right fiction because her test was different and she can pick fictions in different categories. On the text it says " people that get this kind of result are ... Are called divergent... Divergence are extremely dangerous" (Roth, 23) . I beloved that she picked the wrong fiction because she's not going to stick to the rules of A dauntless she's going to do whatever she wants .

I agree with both Tyiesha and Izaih I believe Beatricia didn't choose the same friction that she belongs to because she notice she didn't fit all of the charters tics of being A abnegation . She notic that she was not valuing selflessness enough to be in that fiction . She suppose to do all the right things , but she doesn't. In the text it says " but I am not selfless enough . Sixteen years of trying and I am not enough" ( Roth, 43) . When she finally notice that she didn't belong to the abnegation because she wasn't selflessness enough . she made a deciton to pick a different friction.

    1) What faction would you choose if you were living in this Dystopian Chicago setting?

Me personally, I would choose Dauntless just as Tris did or possibly Candor. Out of all the factions, they are the most important to me. I see myself as brave and honest to others. Dauntless focuses on bravery, while Candor focuses on honesty. In the text, it states “Those who blamed duplicity created Candor… And those who blamed cowardice were the Dauntless” (Roth 43). Those are their reasons for making their faction the way that it is. When it comes down to it, those are the two major things to me that I revolve some of my life around. So if I had to choose between the factions it would be a tie between Dauntless or Candor.

    2) To respond to Shaydaih’s question, I also believe that Tris has changed when she became a Dauntless member, but I would rather call it her finding herself rather than change. Tris was born into the Abnegation faction where they are selfless and care about others more than themselves. Tris originally knew that she didn’t meet the requirements of the Abnegation faction when she says, “I am selfish. I am brave” (Roth 47). Being selfish and brave are what the Dauntless live by, and that’s why she chose her new faction to be them. Tris wanted a place to stand out and be free, and Dauntless was the perfect place for her to do so. She has changed when she became Dauntless, but she was in the midst of finding herself through the process.

    3) Why does Four not really care about Tris being a “Stiff”?

Four doesn’t care much about Tris being a “Stiff” due to the fact that he was one himself. He changed his faction just like she did since they knew that they didn’t meet the requirements that Abnegation had to being a member. “Stiffs” are the slang name for members of the Abnegation faction. During Tris’ initiation and training through her new faction, Dauntless, she is ridiculed and harassed since she was from Abnegation. The “smart” faction, Erudite, wanted to try to get a previous member of Abnegation to state how foul the faction is as a whole, so they picked with her. Four was born into Abnegation. When he has Tris is his fear landscape, she noticed that he was previously Tobias, before choosing Dauntless as his faction. She sees his past life before his current one. In the text, it states “I look from Marcus, who walks slowly towards us, to Four, who inches slowly back, and everything comes together. Marcus had a son who joined Dauntless. His name was… “Tobias”. Marcus shows us his hands. A belt is curled around one of his fists. Slowly he unwinds it from his fingers. “This is for your own good,” he says, and his voice echoes a dozen times” (Roth 329). Marcus is Tobias’ father, who is one of the council members of Abnegation. He’s been scolded ever since his son left the faction for Dauntless. Four & Tris both made the decision in leaving the faction on their own which is something they have in common, as well as them being Divergent. He understands how she feels when he sees the other initiates try to make fun of her because the same happened to him. Overall, Four doesn’t care about Tris being a “Stiff” since they both are considered “Stiffs” since they went through the same obstacles and faction.

    1)
Does Beatrice acts different when she becomes A Dauntless?
Beatrice does start to act different. She becomes more tuff, and becomes more of A dear devil. After her faction switched she had to go into Training with all of the people that became apart of the Dauntless, and switched their fraction on choosing day. She began to fight more people and was able to get use to getting hurt and bruised up. She also becomes more of dear devil because she starts to do more dangerous things. In the text it says “my bruises are turning purple-blue. I have gotten used to aching every time I move “(130). “it isn’t the height that scares me- the height makes me feel alive with energy “ (143). This means that Beatrice has become more of A dear devil and tuff every since she switched her fiction; because when she was in the abnegation fiction she was not like this she was very selfness.

    2)
To respond to Tyiesha question, Four does not care about the type of faction she’s in because they were in the same faction which is abnegation. In the text it says “ he dosen’t seem to care about his talent, or his status among the dauntless, and that is what I would expect from A abnegation”(336). This means that four dosen’t real cares what fraction she’s in in because he was in the same faction.

3)If I had to choose A faction to be in I would most likely pick the Dauntless . I would most likely pick th dauntless because that fraction is more gunner and everyone is so much like dear devils . In the book it says " dauntless prove their bravery ...they are pierced, tattooed, and black clothed . Their primary purposeful is to guard" (7) . This mans they act more normal and live A more normal life like we do . So yes I will probably pick dauntless to be my faction.

Question: Is being Dauntless starting to change Tris?

Answer: Yes, being Dauntless is starting to change Tris. When she first joined them, she had already learned to conquer her fears. Now she is become more fearless, ruthless, and resilient. In the book it says, "Even though I am still injured, I had to fight again today. Lucky this time, I was paired against Myra, who couldn't throw a good punch if someone controlling her arm for her" (130). This shows tha she has become resilient by fighting even though she was injured and uses what she can to her adavantage
